Anthony Quinn Biography

When Anthony was little he was interested in art but this love would be on hold until his later life.

From the time he was little, he was interested in painting, writing and drawing.

He went to high school in (Los Angeles).

Quinn’s birth name was Antonio Rodolfo Quinn Oaxaca. His birth day was on April, the twenty first in nineteen fifteen. The city of his birth was (Chihuahua)( Mexico.) His mother’s name was( Manuela Oaxaca) and his father’s name was (Francisco Quinn).

Anthony Quinn was a quarter (Irish )a quarter (Hispanic) and half( Aztec.)

His father was involved in the( Mexican Revolution) and fought along side (Poncho Villa.) His father later moved to Los Angeles and worked as an assistant camera man for a movie studio.

Anthony Quinn who was( Catholic), in his childhood, wanted to become a priest but when he was in his early pre teen years, he joined a ( Pentecostal) church,

Anthony went to high school but never graduated, Quinn did study( architecture) and art under the famous (Frank Lloyd Wright) at his( Wisconsin) studio.

Quinn developed an intrest in acting and was eventually offered an acting role on stage for eight hundred dollars a week.

After a while of acting on stage for a while he was offered his first movie role. The first movie he acted in was called, “(The Milky Way)” in nineteen thirty six. One of his most famous movies was (“They died with their boots) on” were he plays( Crazy horse.)

By nineteen forty seven, Quinn had appeared in over fifty movies but nobody knew who he was. In the same year, he became a U.S citizen.

What made him rise to fame was a movie called “(Kazan’s Viva Zapata )starring with( Marlon Brando). For that movie he won an Oscar. Over his acting career, he played (Mafia dons), tribal chiefs Filipino freedom fighters,( Chinese.) and (Arab shieks).

He performed roles in almost every race except African American. For the movie “( Lust for Life,)” he received a second Oscar. Some other movies he starred in were,: (“The guns of Navarone)” made in nineteen sixty one, (“Lawrence of Arabia)” made in nineteen sixty two, “(Lion of the Desert”) made in nineteen eighty two, (“Jungle Fever)” made in nineteen ninety one and “ Walk in the Clouds” made in nineteen ninety five.

Quinn’s personal life:

Quinn’s personal life was both passionate and dramatic. His first wife was adopted by Cecil DeMilles and( Katerine DeMilles) with whom he married in nineteen thirty seven. They had four children. One child died of drowning in a swimming pool at the age of two. Their other children were Catalina, born on November, twenty one in nineteen forty two, Duncan born on August, fourth nineteen forty five and Valentia born on December, twenty six nineteen fifty two.

A year later, Quinn married for the second time a (costume designer)( Iolanda Quinn.) Her maiden name was Jolanda Addolori. They had three children. Their children’s n names were Francesco who was born on March, twenty two nineteen sixty two. Danny was born on April, sixteen nineteen sixty four and Lorenzo born on May, seventh nineteen sixty four. Needless to say, they got divorced in nineteen ninety seven. During his marriage to Jolanda, Quinn had an affair on his wife with his secretary witch he fathered a child.

He later married her and fathered two more children. Their names were Antonia who was born on July, twenty third, nineteen ninety three and the second one was Ryan Nicholas who was born on July fifth nineteen ninety six. His wife Kathy Benin stayed together until he died. Quinn also fathered two other children earlier with Friedel Dunbar. Their son’s were Sean who was born on February, seventh, nineteen seventy three and the younger son was born on December thirty first, nineteen seventy six.

Quinn spent the remaining years of his life in (Bristol,)( Rhode Island) but later died of( heart failure) and( pneumonia) while suffering from( throat cancer) in( Boston) (Massachusetts) in two thousand two. He was eighty six.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, Quinn was interested in art and architecture.

He was tutored by the famous Frank Lloyd Wright thru the Toliesin Fellowship. This made it possible for Quinn to win first place in an architectural contest.

Quinn never went to college but did a lot of self educating. He took advantage of books and( museums) for inspiration. In doing so he gave himself a self taught education.

He also traveled to different museums and (art galleries) such as (New York City)

( Mexico City,)( Paris) and( London.)

While movies took him around the world, he got to experience and learn about different cultures an their styles of art. For inspiration, he was influenced by his Mexican ancestry along with his trips to( Europe )and his lengthy stays in (Africa) with time in the (Middle East.) He studied( Art History) in every culture.

In the early eighties, Quinn’s art work was recognized and shown in New York City, Paris, Los Angeles and Mexico City.

His artwork is now owned by both public and private collection’s throughout the world.
